Reasons to Fast

  1. We read in the Bible of many people who fasted in order to draw closer to the Lord. It seemed like such a common thing for believers to practice with the benefits being many. However, why do you think few Christians in our day and culture ever practice fasting?
  2. Three reasons were given in the sermon as to why Christians should fast. Can you recall them?

 

  1. How would you react if the church, such as Bridge, asked the congregation to fast for a week? Before you answer with how you would respond, read the excerpt from the Westminster Confession of Faith below.

The reading of the scriptures with godly fear; the sound preaching, and conscionable hearing of the word, in obedience unto God, with understanding, faith, and reverence: singing of psalms with grace in the heart; as also the due administration and worthy receiving of the sacraments instituted by Christ; are all parts of the ordinary religious worship of God: besides religious oaths and vows, solemn fastings, and thanksgivings upon special occasions, which are, in their several times and seasons, to be used in a holy and religious manner. – Westminster Confession of Faith Chapter 21.5
  1. 2020 has been a rough year emotionally, mentally, and spiritually for everybody. As we enter into 2021, what will you do differently in regards to the spiritual disciplines that you didn’t do in 2020? Will you make fasting a regular part of your walk with Jesus?
